HOD, Digital Arts
Hanli Geyser is Head of Division of Digital Arts.
She developed the Game Design Programs at Wits, which kicked off in February 2012, as well as the BA in Digital Arts degree. These programs provide an introduction to the technical, conceptual and critical foundations needed for students wishing to enter the field of practice which merges technology and the arts.
Hanli graduated with an MA in History of Art from Wits. Her PhD investigates the pedagogic frameworks for teaching game design in a South African context. However, her interests are diverse, spanning many areas of cultural production. She is fascinated by the conjunction of visual arts and narrative texts found in games, interactive and experimental storytelling, comic books and film.
Her Research Interests include
Game Education – how and why we teach Game Design in South Africa
Serious Games – specifically games designed for use in educational and activist environments
Art Games – games as a form of artistic expression
Interactive and Experimental Storytelling – user participation in the narrative: literary, visual and experimental storytelling forms.
